7 essential skills employers are looking for in 2022 [Ireland]

The world of employment has undergone huge changes in the last couple of years. If you are seeking to start out or progress on your career path, it can feel daunting to try and understand the job market. With home working on the rise, and a fluctuating economy, the traditional job model has shifted. Companies now have new requirements when they are searching for recruits – but there are some perennial skills that are still in high demand too. Job seekers need to be aware of which attributes are the most desirable, and tailor their applications to suit. At CareerWise, we are experienced in navigating the world of employment, and our team can help you make the most of your talents when you are searching for your next role. Here is our guide to the 7 essential skills employers are looking for in 2022.

1. Positive attitude

The trials and tribulations of the last few years have been hard on everyone, but no-one wants to work with a whinger! Instead, a can-do attitude, and a willingness to solve problems as they inevitably arise is a much more attractive prospect.

2. Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is a hard skill to define, but an essential attribute for an employee to demonstrate. Those with a high “EQ” will be empathetic towards others, able to place themselves in someone else’s position and understand their attitudes. This makes emotionally intelligent people excellent team players. They enable strong communication between colleagues, ease stress levels, and they excel at giving feedback and having difficult but important conversations. This ability to understand and manage emotions in the working environment makes for a much more productive and happy workplace.

3. Creative thinking

Creative thinking is essential in many ways. New ideas are fundamental for business growth. Creative thinkers see the opportunity in challenges and have excellent problem solving skills. They might overcome an issue by turning things upside-down because they are unafraid to learn and try new ideas. With the challenges businesses have faced in recent times, creative thinking has never been more essential.

4. Excellent communication skills

When you are working remotely rather than surrounded by your team, strong communication skills are a must. It takes really great communication to keep everyone on the same page when you are not in the same room, but with remote working becoming an integral part of working life, employers are keen to find those who can swiftly and accurately relay information, whether that is in person, or through yet another Zoom call.

5. Data and IT security

Technology has been ever present in the working environment for some decades now, but its importance only increases. With remote working becoming the norm, the working world is even more reliant on technology. Data breaches and scams are feared by all employers, so someone with a strong grasp of IT security is very appealing. Companies need to protect their client and customer data, as well as maintain their own security, so even if the role you are hoping for doesn’t seem to have much to do with the IT department, showing that you are tech savvy is a very important part of your job application.

6. Self-discipline

Employers have always hoped to find employees who can make it to work on time in the morning, but once again working from home has highlighted self-discipline as a key attribute. Companies need to know that their employees have the drive to get the job done without the pressurised environment of the office chivvying them on. Prove to your prospective employer that you don’t need chasing, and that you can be efficient and effective, even when surrounded by all the temptations of home!

7. Resilience

In turbulent times, employers are desperate for workers who can keep calm in the face of disaster, keep smiling, and get the job done anyway. Those with a growth mindset, who are adaptable and willing to evolve with their company, are well on their way to making the careers steps they want in 2022.
