A Career in Recruitment – Is it for you?

How many people do you know who can honestly say their jobs are exciting?

Probably not many, but recruitment is one of the most exciting and fast paced industries to work in. Whether it’s securing someone a job or closing a business deal, there is always something going on!

As Ireland’s unemployment rates continue to drop and hit the lowest rate on record in 20 years (4.3% Dec 2022), more people are employed in Ireland now than ever before! The demand for Recruitment services has become a vital resource, both for the client and the candidate.

There is a very positive trend in the job vacancies within Ireland and there’s never been a better time to have a career in recruitment with plenty of opportunities in a challenging market for resources.

At CareerWise we are currently recruiting in the Cork, Mayo, Shannon & Galway offices to support the growing jobs market in Ireland which is at an all-time high within life science.

A career in recruitment can provide you with valuable opportunities to develop skills that could contribute to your professional growth like communication, critical thinking and organisation which could apply to future positions and help you advance your career in the industry. A recruiter is responsible for attracting candidates for jobs and matching them to either contract or permanent positions with client companies. You’ll build positive relationships in order to give a better understanding of your client’s recruitment needs and requirements.

What does a successful recruiter look like?

After more than 18 years within the recruitment industry, I have seen all the challenges it can present to the candidate, the client, and the recruiter. The most important skill set is to be both resilient and persistent. There will be massive highs, but also, you will experience some very low days; always celebrate the small wins! You have to learn to appreciate all the little wins you have along the way, because sometimes it’s hard to get the big ones.

With all this in mind, it provides the opportunity to have a very rewarding career and a recruiter’s career path can be lucrative, with high salaries, good progression and many job options.

What skills does a good recruiter have?

  • The ability to listen – you are the match maker between the candidate and the client.
  • Positive plus Confident – you are offering your services to both candidate and clients alike, sometimes outside of office hours.
  • Marketing expert – you know your expertise and have market knowledge to offer.
  • Target driven and are comfortable with sales targets.
  • Comfortable working under pressure.
  • Have the ability to build good working long term relationships.
  • An effective communicator – you need to be tactful and considerate.
  • The ability to multitask – a recruiter’s day can be hectic.
  • Time Management – vacancies need to be filled quickly and candidates need to be updated.
  • The ability to prioritise.
  • Patient and flexible – it is not always on your time schedule.
  • Responsive – you need to act quickly for both the client and candidate as it is a very competitive market.
  • Social Media – this will give you an edge as you keep up to date with current technologies.
  • The ability to read body language and to “understanding what is not being said”.
  • Reliable – you have to be good to your word and deliver what you commit to.
  • Team Player – recruitment is a team sport.

In summary, recruitment is an essential service to both candidates and clients alike; it’s a worthwhile career where you will meet some of the brightest people, have fun along the way and the end results are very rewarding. People are changing their career path to work in recruitment as they stive for a better work-life balance. Recruiting allows people to live a meaningful life, both inside and outside the office; you will have a very fulfilling career and have the ability to make positive changes to people’s lives.

As an industry, recruiters pride themselves on helping people and delivering results in a very competitive environment.
