If you work in the engineering industry, you’ll know how much variety there can be across different sectors, and how many opportunities there are for skilled engineers to further their careers. If you’ve been hankering for a change, and feel that a different area of engineering could be better for you, this is a great time to think about a change of career.
Engineers are in high demand across most sectors, and there is a skills shortage in many areas. This means that excellent positions with good salaries are available to high calibre candidates, and this includes worldwide opportunities if these appeal to you. Exploring the options can be an interesting process in itself, and the research you do at this stage will pay dividends if you do decide to pursue a change of direction.
1. Be honest with yourself. Before you make a decision about the future of your career, consider the reasons for feeling dissatisfied where you are. Think about what it is that makes you desire a change, and exactly what you would be hoping to gain if you moved to a different sector.
2. Do your research. Don’t be tempted by images of aerospace engineering or impressive robotics if you do not know anything about the realities of working in these areas. Take your time to research any ideas thoroughly and talk to engineers who are already in the roles you are considering applying for.
3. Consider your qualifications. If your qualifications are specific to the area in which you already work, find out what you would need to develop in order to make the move you are considering. Would you need to re-train or take another qualification, or would you need to start again with an alternative training path or an apprenticeship?
4. Get work experience. Don’t even consider a move into a different area of engineering until you have taken up some work experience in this field. Talk to your colleagues about your plans and investigate any contacts you have, and ensure that you find out exactly what the role you are considering involves, as well as building up valuable experience that will help you to become more employable in this area.
