CIPD Southern Region’s breakfast event, sponsored by CareerWise Recruitment was held at Maryborough House Hotel today Wednesday 6th April. A packed room of HR Professionals and Business executives heard Jim Barry, MD, The Barry Group share his views and experience on Transformational Leadership and how the business has grown by constantly challenging the norms.
The event was opened by Margaret Collins, CMCIPD, Vice-Chair of CIPD Southern Region Committee who welcomed the assembled group and introduced Ken Murphy, Director, CareerWise Recruitment (Sponsor). Ken spoke about their expertise in Leadership Search and current trends in recruitment noting a pick up in the Food Sector, activity in SME, Indigenous companies and Tech start ups. He then introduced the Keynote Speaker – Jim Barry, MD, The Barry Group.
Jim opened his presentation with the following quote;
‘Leadership is the function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues and taking effective action to realise your own leadership potential’
He spoke about the Leadership journey and to be aware of the blind spots; on the primary qualities of Leadership and how in his view it was 80% mindset and 20% mechanics. The importance of Emotional Intelligence in dealing with both staff and customers. Alignment was a theme that ran throughout his presentation and cited as a key factor in the success of the business, along with a positive team environment and care for the customer – ‘What’s Right for the Business and What’s Right for the Customer’. He also highlighted through the use of video and graphics, the need for open communication, empowerment, teamwork and genuine feedback as critical to their success.
Margaret Collins, CMCIPD, Vice-Chair, CIPD Southern Region took to the podium once again to thank Jim Barry for a wonderful and insightful presentation; Ken Murphy, Director, CareerWise Recruitment (Sponsor) and offered a gift courtesy of Irish Examiner to Jim in appreciation for his time which was presented by Liam Linehan, CFCIPD, former Chairman, CIPD Southern Region. Margaret also reminded the audience that the next event on the CIPD Calendar will take place on May 11th 2016, members will be advised in due course.
Ken Murphy graduated from University College Cork in 1987 with an Electrical Engineering degree before moving to the US as a Network Design Engineer with BellSouth Corporation. His return to Ireland in 1989 heralded a career which concentrated on the multinational sector, and involved working with companies such as Apple Computer, Cabletron, FMC Automotive, Moog, General Semiconductor and Technicolor.
Ken is a specialist in quality management, purchasing, logistics and supply chain management. He has significant expertise and experience in managing the changing demands of the global media, electronics and automotive sectors at operational and project management levels.
Ken leads CareerWise Recruitment’s Cork operations. He has served on local and national committees of IPICS (The Supply Chain Management Institute), CIPD, the Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA), and has completed a three-year term as Chair of the UCC Alumni Board.
Ken has recently been elected as a Director of the Cork Chamber for a four year term to help promote business and drive policy objectives for the Cork Region
