Whether you’re trying to win over a potential partner or a potential employer, the key is to be confident, genuine, and prepared. Both scenarios can be the same, sweaty-palms-inducing experience. In this post, we’ll share our top CareerWise tips to help you shine in both areas.
So, you’ve picked out your best outfit, rehearsed your answers in front of the mirror, and mentally prepared for an awkward “Tell me about yourself” moment. No, you’re not getting ready for a first date – you’re about to step into your very first job interview!
Whether you’re trying to win over a potential partner or a potential employer, the key is to be confident, genuine, and prepared.
Both scenarios can be the same, sweaty-palms-inducing experience. In this post, we’ll share our top CareerWise tips to help you shine in both areas.
You’ve got about seven seconds to make a good first impression, in both cases. That means showing up on time, dressing appropriately, and flashing a confident (but not creepy) smile.
❤️ Tip: A firm handshake and eye contact go a long way! While deodorant is a good idea, I wouldn’t go overboard on the Lynx…
On a date, you’re trying to convince someone you’re fun, smart, and not a serial killer. In an interview, you’re trying to prove you’re capable, reliable and an exact fit for the role you are applying for.
❤️ Tip: Speak clearly, avoid filler words like “umm” and “like,” and have a few key stories ready to showcase your skills (just like you’d have fun stories on a date to make yourself sound interesting).
An interview isn’t just about having the right skills, it’s about clicking with your potential employer. Just like the first date, if the vibe is off, it’s probably not going to work out.
❤️ Tip: Show some enthusiasm! No one wants to hire (or potentially date) someone who looks like they’d rather be anywhere else
“What’s your biggest weakness?” feels a lot like “Why are you still single? and both can be traps.
❤️ Tip: Be honest in your answer, but spin it positively. “I’m a perfectionist” sounds better than “I have no idea what I’m doing.”
You wouldn’t ghost after a great first date, right? (Well… you shouldn’t.) The same goes for an interview – sending a thank-you email can make a big difference.
❤️ Tip: A simple “Thank you for your time, I really enjoyed our conversation” can leave a great final impression.
It’s not always about you. Maybe the company that didn’t give you an interview had hundreds of other applicants, and the budget for only one position. Let’s face it, we all say no sometimes. The rejection might not reflect upon you in the slightest. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, it’s just not a match. And that’s okay! Not every date leads to love, and not every interview leads to a job.
❤️ Tip: Learn from the experience, tweak your approach, and move on to the next opportunity. There are plenty of fish (and jobs) in the sea!
At the end of the day, whether you’re looking for love or a job, confidence, preparation, and being yourself will always set you up for success. So go out there this Valentines and charm their socks off!
