Before we look ahead at the future of Electronic Engineering let’s first look back.

In the late 1980’s, and up to the early part of the 21st Century, Ireland had a huge supply of well-educated people working in a very progressive electronics market.

By the early 1970s, many of the world’s leading electronics companies had established basic assembly and test facilities here, including Digital Equipment Corporation (1971), Measurex (1973), Northern Telecom (1973), Ericsson (1974), Data 100 (1975), NEC (1975), Nixdorf Computer (1977), Westinghouse Electric Corporation (1978), Amdahl (1979), Wang (1979), Apple (1980) and Fujitsu (1980).

In the 1980s, the strategy moved to specialisation in key high-tech sectors. Along came Lotus (1984), Microsoft (1985), Intel (1989), Tellabs (1989) Motorola (1989), Dell (1990), HP (1995), IBM (1996), Oracle (1996), Xerox (1998).

However, is a career in electronic engineering a good move for students today?

Absolutely! Smart products and IoT are becoming the norm with new companies growing in Ireland. The battle for talent in these highly-skilled industries continues to intensify and employers are willing to pay a premium for hard to find skills.

As much as students are wise to have one eye on future job prospects, they must ultimately choose a course that is right for them. Electronic engineering offers a broad range of exciting career challenges including producing new innovations and developments in telecommunications, robotics, computing hardware and power and electrical equipment.

Industries such as the medical device and pharmaceutical industries are crying out for engineering professionals such as manufacturing engineers, automation engineers, packaging engineers, chemical engineers, process engineers, maintenance engineers and lean six sigma engineers.

If you like the idea of creating electrical systems which could help millions of people on a day to day basis, if you love a challenge and want to work in a rapidly progressing job that will ultimately aid in transforming our worlds information technology, then studying Electrical & Electronic Engineering is for you.

Shortfall of Electronic Engineers

Article by: Tom Devaney (CareerWise Recruitment)

There are currently 12 Irish Educational Institutions offering Electrical and Electronic Courses, which will support the Irish market going forward and in turn will ensure the electronics companies in Ireland will grow at a controlled rate, however, Ireland must produce more engineers at a quicker rate to keep up with demands on infrastructure and technology.

We have exceptional opportunities in Ireland and a shortage of suitable candidates for our innovative clients throughout the country. Suitably qualified international engineers are always welcome as well as young Irish candidates to ensure that Ireland becomes central to the growth of the world market for innovative products.

The outlook for Ireland’s tech skills is looking positive for 2018 according to the Higher Education Authority (HEA), let’s hope it goes some way to filling the existing skills gap.

We at CareerWise have made a commitment to remain true to our core beliefs and values and always to provide a quality service offering. All our consultants come from industry so we understand the challenges around demands for niche skills.

Many people hold fixed ideas about the engineering industry, with 50% of teenagers in a recent study stating that engineering is a job for men. This is a worrying perception of a dynamic and growing sector, and challenging preconceived ideas is a motivating factor in many initiatives currently working to raise the profile of engineering.

Engineering, essentially, approaches problems by searching for solutions in creative ways. Many people think of it as a branch of science that demands a research-based, dull existence, but this is not the reality of a career in engineering. Many people within the industry – especially young, female engineers – are determined to change the way their jobs are seen and to raise the profile of engineering as a career option.

Here’s Why Engineering Must Be Creative And Diverse

Limitations set limits. This may sound obvious, but it is a big problem if only one group of people become engineers, since they will only be seeking out solutions that suit them and their place in the world. We need diverse and dynamic problem solvers from every background in order to develop solutions that suit everyone and offer us a real way forward.

Ideas inspire excellence. Being challenged to think in different ways is essential in order to step outside the box and consider new ideas. Exchanging ideas with others who have different experiences and knowledge to you offers an important way to expand your perspective and grow your mind.

Our world is changing. The world around us is changing with a rapidity that has not been experienced by previous generations, and creative solutions that enable us to adapt to this are vital. Talented creative minds are required to see the potential of the opportunities available to us, and to continue to develop solutions for our modern world.

Compassion is a pre-requisite. An engineer cannot truly embrace the quest to find solutions to problems that face the world if they are not compassionate. A deep desire to make the world a better place and develop strategies and solutions that make a positive difference to others is a driving force in most people who pursue engineering as a career.

Engineers must be role models. In recognising that we need to solve problems for ALL of the people in our society, rather than just the privileged few, we acknowledge that there is a great need for understanding and appreciation of diversity. Female role models are essential to ensure that women are represented appropriately in engineering, and people of colour must be able to identify with role models who share their world experience.

The engineering industry is a core part of our business world, and we must be aware of its power to effect change in future generations. The pulse of change is felt more vitally in this industry than in many others, and we must insist that it is built on creativity and equality.

There’s no doubt that you will have heard of the GDPR changes that come into effect as of 25th May 2018. The recruitment industry by nature does hold a large amount of personal data, but what does this new legislation mean for the recruitment industry?

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) is a regulation by which the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union (EU).

By now, you should be aware that you need to start preparing for the new regulations in time to safeguard your business against the increased maximum fine. In May 2018, the fine increases to €20 million or 4% of global turnover (whichever is greater).

Since its launch on March 28th last, the Irish GDPR Awareness Coalition has been running a campaign to explain some of the major pain points for specific industry sectors in simple language.

This infographic from the Coalition highlights 6 key points recruiters should explore while getting to grips with GDPR:

Brendan Long (Head of Accounting and Finance, CareerWise Recruitment)

1. No Hoarding – All personal data must be deleted after a set period of time, including when it’s no longer used for the purpose it was collected.
2. Ask Nicely – GDPR requires explicit consent for data processing
3. Be Honest – GDPR also requires you to tell someone why you’re collecting their data and how you’re going to use it.
4. Own Up – Data breaches or cyber attacks must be reported to affected parties and the Data Protection Commission within 72 hours.
5. Lock It Up –You must provide appropriate levels of security for any data you store. This includes cyber security software and access controls.
6. Be Accountable – Take stock of the personal data you hold and ask yourself how you got it, why you’re holding it, how secure it is, whether you share it – and for which reasons.

Ken Murphy (Director, CareerWise Recruitment attended a recent Cork Chamber Business Breakfast on Friday October 6 at the Cork Airport Hotel.

Sinéad McSweeney, Managing Director Twitter Ireland and VP of Twitter’s Public Policy and Communications team in EMEA was the guest speaker and the breakfast was held in association with the Irish Examiner. A Midleton native, Sinéad has been a key leader within the Twitter team since she joined the company in 2012. She gave a very open view on her career and her hopes for the next generation. Most of her jobs did not exist when she studied law many years ago and for the next generation, many of the jobs they will work have not been invented yet. She indicated that it is very important to continue with the promotion of STEM subjects for boys and girls so that they can be trained in developing critical thinking skills. Also in the age of social media, it is very important that we do not lose the skills of verbal communication.”

The majority of financial professionals and businesses across many industries have, for years, been relying on Microsoft Excel as a tool to manage their financial operations. Excel has been a household name for many years, and it certainly provides a reliable way to manage accounting for most people.

If you’re seeking a new role or looking to progress within your current company, assessing your skills and considering the value of career development in different areas can be helpful. Becoming fluent in the language of Excel and its competitors can be very useful, and can help you to make educated decisions about the very best system for your setup.

What Is Great About Excel?

Integration is excellent. Excel is highly valuable in that it works flawlessly with other Microsoft applications, such as Word, Powerpoint and Outlook. The hassle involved in converting or exporting files is removed, which is a big benefit for many professionals.

It is affordable. Office 365, Microsoft’s office package, is priced very reasonably and can be spread into monthly payments or bought as a one off purchase.

It’s easy to use. A major reason why Excel has endured for so long is that it is simple and straightforward to use, saving time and energy.

Templates are useful. There are several very useful templates within Excel, covering payroll function with ease. This aspect, again, is labour saving and easy to set up and maintain.

Potential Problems With Excel

Excel does not enable easy collaboration. With more and more businesses adopting cloud based approaches to their documents and spreadsheets, problems may arise when Excel seriously lags behind in this area. It is possible to use the web app for multiple user working, but it’s not as easy or as useful to work with as the desktop programme. Google sheets is a clearly superior option in this area, because collaboration is made much easier to manage.

Excel is limited when working with diverse data sets. Basic graphing is possible in Excel, but if this is a function you like to work with at an advanced level, Excel will simply not be enough for you. Experts in this area suggest that Google Sheets, Zoho Sheet and Corel Quattro Pro may have the edge here, enabling professional charts and graphs more effectively.

Excel may not be enough for larger businesses. Scalability can be a big issue for many companies who have been working with Excel, since it is not adept at handling large data sets and works with huge files that create problems for many computers. Competitor Oracle Hyperion offers budgeting and planning tools that can cope better with larger amounts of data, so has a clear advantage here.

Recent studies show that employees value the connections they have with their colleagues, and the majority feel that they are more productive when they have friends at work. Working within an atmosphere that encourages and develops positive connections between workmates can be great for your communication skills and business networking as well as your social life, but how do you know which of your colleagues to seek out as a personal friend?

Top Tips On Building Relationships With The Right People At Work

There are many different personality types, and it can be helpful to consider who will make the best sort of friend at work. The positive or negative traits described here cover a huge variety of attitudes and behaviours, and most people will be a blend of more than one type. Can you spot any of your own personality traits on this list?

The helpful supporter. Building a friendship with the person who identifies themselves as a helper will pay dividends when you need a hand with a last minute job. This character will go out of his or her way to help, and you will never feel alone if you have someone like this to rely on.

The chatterbox. Making friends with the office chatterbox will always guarantee that you hear the gossip first, but you may find that this friendship eats into your work time and leaves you with a pile of unfinished projects. If you have a connection with someone like this, try to limit your chatting time or arrange to meet up outside of working hours to catch up with the latest news!

The experienced expert. Someone who has been there and done it all before can be a huge asset on a project team and a good friend in the workplace too. Friends who are keen to pass on their wisdom, and do so in a non-patronising way, can help you to develop your skills and confidence within your field of expertise and in your everyday life.

The pessimist. Someone who complains or points out the negatives of every situation can suck the joy out of your working life and lead you to feel frustrated with your role. Refusing to be drawn into woeful awfulising can release you to enjoy the positives throughout your daily life.

The constructive critic. Someone who is open and honest about the ideas you put out and the work you submit is a very valuable asset and can make an excellent friend. You have the opportunity to develop your skills and improve your output at the same time as building a relationship with someone with a high level of integrity. This is a winner!

The taker. Reciprocal support and help is a key part of any friendship, and knowing that you can rely on a workmate for a favour is great. However, the person who constantly asks for favours but never returns them makes a poor friend and ally in the workplace. Ensure that you do not slip into this negative role by taking care to reciprocate the favours done for you.
