Despite global patterns of unemployment and financial struggle, the employment figures in Galway City and County are on the rise, increasing more than 9,300 in the last five years, according to the statistics released by the Central Statistics Office. The data reveals that on Census night in 2016, 110,067 people were recorded as being in employment, which is an increase of more than 9% since the 2011 Census.
These positive figures are said to be the result of the Government’s Action Plan on Jobs, which aimed to get people back into employment and focused on equality of opportunity. Minister Cannon summarised the goal thus,
“Fine Gael is working to build a republic of opportunity which will see everyone have a fair chance to reach their full potential.”
