If you are a parent, like I am, of a student who is receiving their results, this Friday, I’ve got your back. At this stage, we all know that there is nothing that can be done now to change the outcome on results day, however, it’s still worth being prepared for all eventualities. I

Leaving Cert Results 2024

This Friday, teenagers from all around the country, including my own child, will be getting their long-awaited Leaving Certificate results. This is a pivotal moment that marks the culmination of years of study and hard work and the anticipation can be both exciting and nerve-wracking.

At this stage, we all know that there is nothing that can be done now to change the outcome on results day, however, it’s still worth being prepared for all eventualities.

While these results may represent an exciting new chapter in our teen’s lives, we can also assume that no matter how “not bothered” they may appear, most teenagers will be experiencing a certain level of anxiety. This anxiety is fundamentally driven by the fear of the unknown. Waiting for that piece of paper which ultimately has the power to dictate the next path in their future. However, I think it is important to offer them a little perspective.

Most of us can remember when our own results were released and that feeling like this was an ‘all or nothing’ scenario. We all, of course, now realise that although the Leaving Certificate is important, it is not the only deciding factor. The Leaving Cert results do not define a person’s worth or potential. Most colleges have alternative admission routes not based solely on an accumulation of CAO points.

Often, we applaud the idea of having specific and focused goals. However, these goals need to have some flexibility. I think, it is important to have a Plan B or a series of options should the perfect scenario not materialise. I have listed a few quick to hand links and notes that maybe helpful on the day.

Portal: Students will be able to access their results online, through the Candidate Self Service Portal (CSSP) from 10am with results being issued to schools at the same time. To access the results on the CSSP, students will need their examination number, CSSP password and PPS number. Having this information at hand before the morning of the results will ease any extra tension for everyone involved.

Points Calculator: There are many tools available to help students calculate their points, including this free calculator on Careersportal.

Key Dates: Brian Mooney of the Irish Times provides a comprehensive list of important with dates and deadlines for viewing exam scripts, appealing subjects and CAO offers here.

College is not for everyone: It is easy to forget that third level education is not the natural next step for every student, for a variety of reasons. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to a full-time college course. These programmes alternate phases of on-the-job and off-the-job training and development and provide an opportunity to get a recognised qualification while at the same time gaining practical experience relevant to your chosen career and being paid. A full list of trades covered by the standards-based apprenticeship is available on www.apprenticeship.ie, there is also a free phone number for further information.

Lastly, I wish all students “and parents” expecting results the very best of luck. I think, it’s important, as parents to maintain a positive mindset to help our kids believe in their abilities no matter what the outcome. Remind them to ⬇️
