Using STAR Stories to Win Technical Interviews

Finding the right approach can help to give you the confidence you need to smash your interview out of the park, and when you’re looking for a framework, STAR Stories can help. Often known as the Star Method, or STAR interview technique, this could be exactly what you need to stay in control and answer interview questions with clarity and panache.

Making the most of your interview experience is crucial, ensuring that you stand out from the other candidates, and working with our expert recruitment team can give you the edge you need. Let’s take a look at the STAR technique and find out more about how it can help you to secure the job of your dreams.

Interview Strategies That Work

The STAR Methodology is an excellent way to demonstrate your competency at interview, and is quite simple once you understand the concept. STAR stands for:

Situation: Setting the context for your story

Task: Explain your responsibility or the challenge you faced

Action: Describe the steps you took to address the situation

Result: Share the outcome and what you learned

Using this framework effectively enables you to give concise and compelling answers that highlight the skills and experience you can bring to the role you are interviewing for. It’s great for behavioural questions, where you can share real life examples that illustrate your points.

STAR in Action

The STAR Method is a formula for success, and is especially helpful in showing your conflict resolution skills. Here’s how it works, step by step:

  • Situation. This is your chance to set up your answer by describing a situation you have faced that allows you to display your best qualities. You should describe the situation you have chosen and the conflict it brought about, giving up to four pieces of relevant information for context. Try to be concise here, simply using this step to set yourself up to discuss the action you took.

  • Task. Explain your role in the situation and briefly summarise why this was important to the outcome. This is another setting up step, before the all-important ‘action’ phase, and simply requires you to provide the information in a concise manner. For instance, “As a Supervisor for this project, I was responsible for ensuring that deadlines were met and that senior management were happy with the direction we were taking, as well as team members.”

  • Action. This is the key part of the STAR method, and this is where you will be able to demonstrate the skills your interviewer is looking for. You should discuss the steps you took in the situation you are describing, and highlight the specific elements that are relevant to the role you are interviewing for. Focus on yourself and your contribution to the resolution of the situation, and take the opportunity to showcase your skillset here.

  • Result. You will have picked a situation with a positive outcome (if you didn’t, pick another!) and you should talk about how this came about. You can describe how your actions led to positive results and why this was so important to the project, and you can expand on your experience here to show what you will be bringing to the role.

Practice Makes Perfect

In your interview preparation, you can consider the way you might use the STAR Method to answer behavioural questions such as how you work as part of a team or how you have helped meet certain project goals. It is a good idea to come up with a list of recent examples that you can use to illustrate your answers, and to ask a friend or family member to practice with you and give you honest feedback about the way you answer these questions.

This type of question is very useful to your interviewer since it demonstrates your problem-solving skills and provides an insight into the way you approach conflicts or dilemmas in the context of your role. You can use your answers to explore your compatibility with the organisation you are interviewing for, and show how well you will adapt to being part of a team.
