The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Southern Region began their 2014 events programme with a recent business breakfast sponsored by CareerWise Recruitment to hear Fergus Barry, Managing Partner of Fergus Barry and Associates share his insights into Performance Management in Ireland.
Fergus highlighted that the concept is only truly successful when it is about the ‘Management of Performance’ and not just a system or procedure of ‘Performance Management’. The focus for successful ‘Management of Performance’ is on the key dialogues about performance that take place between the line manager and the performer. He identified a world-class approach to the delivery of these dialogues and emphasised the need for simplicity in getting it right. He highlighted the role of line management, HR and individual employees in the process. He also spoke of the basic requirement for assertiveness in management and the building of managerial confidence and competence to manage real performance development.
