Any period of change can bring about worry because it represents the unknown.
Either way, it’s important for you to remember that it is possible to find a new job during this time – or indeed, any other time of economic uncertainty. One industry that is still thriving in these uncertain times is the Medical Device industry.
Below are my 8 top tips when you are looking for a new job in the Medical Device sector or indeed any sector.
Over 70% of all jobs are filled through networking. There are many ways one can network – let everyone you know that you are seeking to return to work and be specific ‘I am looking for full time role within medical device “One of your friends may know if the company they are working for are hiring and may point you in the right direction. Many companies use Recruitment companies as their hiring partners. For example, Zimmer Biomet partner with us, CareerWise Recruitment, for all their Production Operators. Nervous? “Of course, you are, I certainly was”! However, you have far more transferable skills than you realize.
Hardworking, flexible, diligent, attention to detail, able to follow instruction, team player, enthusiastic, desire to work, maturity, commitment – All of these skills are what most employers are looking for. Believe in yourself!
Out of the workforce for a while, your confidence will have taken a dip and you may be out of practice in talking about yourself. Invest in a professional interview coaching session – it will be worth the investment! Or a good Recruiter will guide you in the right direction and help you prepare for interview. If not offered request some help. This comes automatically from CareerWise prior to attending an interview.
Difficult to define, however this is essential in the interview process. If you are to convince the interviewer that you can hit the ground running that needs to start with you. An employer is looking for a highly motivated, driven and committed candidate that will be a value added to the organisation. Everything from your body language needs to communicate this positive energy – how you sit, eye contact, total engagement.
It takes courage to be re-entering the workforce having been at home for several years and it can be challenging and daunting. Success won’t come overnight but with careful planning, and logical structured approach you will be well on your way to a rewarding new career.
Make sure the job you apply for is what you are looking for long term. Look at the shift pattern that the company is offering. Does it suit you and your family? Does it allow you enough time off to spend with your friends and family? Some of the 24/7 shifts can be very attractive allowing you time off during the week to get things done.
Finally, one of the main reasons a candidate doesn’t get the job is because they don’t show at interview that they want the job and that they are ready to commit long term with the company.
Thank the interviewer for giving you the opportunity to attend the interview, show interest in the role and at the end of the interview tell them how much you want the job!
